A few weeks before the election, after a series of sleepless nights, I woke up before dawn with this song in my head.

Up until then, I'd been in a creative drought for years. But the high anxiety of the campaign season ended up inspiring me in unexpected ways. I'd finally finished a song that I felt passionate about. So for the first time in 8 years, I went back in the studio.

On a whim, I asked my friend Jeff Campbell—one of my musical heroes and one of the most respected songwriters I know—if he'd produce the track. He went a step further and ended up playing guitar, arranging vocals, and writing an intro and bridge for the song.

Hard to put into words how lucky I feel to have such supportive friends. Big thanks also to the fantastically talented Gawain Mathews, who played bass, lead guitar, and engineered the track, and to Rick Munoz who rocked like a thunder god on the drums.

Thanks for listening!

lyrics

To all of you who lay awake from 3 am until the break
Of day because your mind is racing from a dream of something chasing
You across an open plain through empty fields in heavy rain,
Running faster, still it gains. I feel it too, I feel the same.

Don't lay back down now we are awake
Now there’s more time for us to take
Fight or flight? Fight or flight is not our only choice tonight.
Help me find another side

That night across the kitchen table, I fought with you like I was able
to persuade you you were wrong, the argument went on and on
We reenact the civil war, fight over what the fight was for:
to free the slaves or rights of states: don’t lose the common ground we made

Don't lay back down now we are awake
Now there’s more time for us to take
Fight or flight? Fight or flight is not our only choice tonight.
Help me find another side

Armed to teeth and geared for riot: look at what our fear invited
Starting war to keep the peace, starving poor to feed the greed
The ugly truth about this life: it's easy to believe in the beautiful lie
that someone guides us from above and wants us all to fight for love

Don't lay back down now we are awake
Now there’s more time for us to take
Fight or flight? Fight or flight is not our only choice tonight.
Help me find another side
